Our members power our work – supporting policy engagement, research, and behaviour change campaigns that drive real improvements in aluminium packaging recycling.
“Membership means being part of the collective effort shaping the future of sustainable packaging – ensuring the money invested through EPR and DRS delivers real results”
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
ALUPRO: THE VOICE OF THE ALUMINIUM PACKAGING VALUE CHAIN
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is the UK’s new packaging regulation that transfers the full net cost of collecting, sorting and recycling packaging waste onto the businesses that place packaging on the UK market. It’s intended to improve recycling rates and encourage more sustainable packaging design – but how well it works depends on how effectively the system recognises the recyclability and value of different packaging materials.
That’s where Alupro steps in. As the voice of the aluminium packaging value chain, we represent producers, manufacturers and recyclers of aluminium packaging in discussions with government and regulators to make sure the EPR system reflects aluminium’s true circular value – high recyclability, economically valuable, and essential to the low-carbon transition.
SHAPING A FAIR AND EFFECTIVE EPR SYSTEM
Alupro’s focus is on ensuring that the recycling fees paid by producers genuinely deliver better recycling outcomes. We work to improve data transparency, recycling infrastructure, and scheme design so that EPR supports materials with strong environmental performance. Our ongoing engagement with policymakers has helped ensure aluminium is recognised as a leading example of circular packaging. Through constructive engagement with government and industry, Alupro led data-based, logical analysis that refined the EPR fee model so that aluminium’s household waste disposal fee accurately reflects its recyclability and value within the circular economy.
Our engagement with policymakers ensured the EPR regulations recognised the recyclability and material value of aluminium packaging, with our work being instrumental in the setting of an appropriate household waste disposal fee:
WHY MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)
CHAMPIONING ALUMINIUM IN THE UK’S DEPOSIT RETURN SCHEME (DRS)
The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) will introduce a small, refundable deposit on drinks containers to encourage consumers to return them for recycling. Each UK nation will run its own version of the scheme, aiming to reduce litter and improve recycling rates. This means new collection systems, labelling requirements, and potential costs to manage.
DRIVING CONSISTENCY AND CIRCULARITY
Alupro is focussed on ensuring that DRS genuinely delivers a more circular packaging system. Our goal is to build a consistent, practical DRS – one that’s simple for producers to manage and reinforces recycling infrastructure that works. Our input ensures that aluminium remains the benchmark for closed-loop recycling, while systems are designed to capture and return as much high-quality material as possible.
WHY MEMBERSHIP MATTERS
- Joining Alupro means having a voice in how the Deposit Return Scheme is designed and implemented.
- Your membership supports our policy engagement and research to align the different national systems, promote consistency, and protect the value of aluminium within a new collection network. It’s a direct investment in securing the long-term role of aluminium as the most sustainable packaging choice.
- By being an Alupro member, you’re helping to ensure DRS rewards truly circular materials and maintains aluminium’s leadership in sustainable packaging.
IT’S A DIRECT INVESTMENT IN THE SUCCESS OF THE SYSTEM YOUR BUSINESS DEPENDS ON.
