“Alupro membership gives us extra capacity and collaboration opportunities. We support and count on Alupro to extend our reach with other stakeholders whether that’s carrying our messages to Government or coordinating and delivering communication programmes like MetalMatters and Every Can Counts. We have a lot of direct reach ourselves as a company, but it is through organisations like Alupro that we can connect with other stakeholders and other parts of our value chain to improve recycling levels” Andy Doran, senior manager of sustainability & recycling development at Novelis Europe.
Novelis, and its predecessor company Alcan, were founding members of Alupro 28 years ago when it was formed in 1989. Their continued support of Alupro has contributed to the success of programmes like MetalMatters and Every Can Counts.
Novelis Inc. is the global leader in aluminium rolled products and the World’s largest recycler of aluminium. The company operates in 10 countries, has approximately 12,000 employees and reported $10 billion in revenue for its 2016 fiscal year. Novelis is a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, an industry leader in aluminium and copper, and metals flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, a multinational conglomerate based in Mumbai, India.
In the UK Novelis has one production facility at Latchford, Warrington which is about to celebrate it’s 25th year in operation. This is a key part of the European Novelis recycling network and produces ingots for the beverage can manufacturing industry with the capcity to recycle around 150,000 tonnes of used beverage cans (UBCs) per annum – more than every aluminium beverage can sold in the UK. The plant helps local authorities, waste management companies, business owners and community enterprises, to maximise the potential of the valuable aluminium they collect. It also provides closed loop recycling capacity for aluminium automotive markets and employs 170 people. Elsewhere in the UK there is a logistics and distribution centre to service their UK automotive customers, this employs a further 40 people.
Think Cans, a website dedicated to aluminium recycling, has been created by Novelis. Complete with ‘canny facts’, interactive tools and educational resources for Key Stages 1-4 the site is designed to make recycling fun and provide a wealth of resources to engage children in the role aluminium plays in the World.
